Climate change is a major challenge for people with disabilities. The negative effects further complicate their living conditions, which are characterised by structural barriers, discrimination and low participation in social life. One consequence of climate change is increasing (internal) displacement, which further worsens the living conditions of people with disabilities. The health effects of climate change also pose particular risks for people with disabilities, as it becomes more difficult for them to receive the necessary medical support in line with their needs.

According to the Paris Climate Agreement, measures to combat climate change should be aligned with human rights. This means, among other things, that climate adaptation measures must be inclusive and barrier-free and that people with disabilities must be considered and actively involved in international climate adaptation measures. Special attention must be paid to children and elderly people with disabilities, as they are exposed to an increased risk.

The conference will therefore look at the consequences of climate change on the lives of people with disabilities and, with a view to German international cooperation, examine the question of how it can counter the negative consequences of climate change and make climate adaptation measures inclusive and barrier-free.
