The Ark Community in India, Calcutta

The Ark Community in Asansol and Calcutta (West Bengal), Bangalore (Carnataka) and Nandibazar (Kerala) are few of many arks worldwide, who live together with people with and without disabilities. Aim of the ark is to give, especially people with learning disabilities, the opportunity to become a full member of the community through participation. At the same time the members will get the support and assistance they need.


Tasks for volunteers:

  • daily support and assistance of people living in the ark
  •  mediation and skill training for daily life, implies assistance with tasks like eating, dressing, strolling etc.
  • cooperation in the organisation for occupants with and without disabilities
  • support of the domestic economy and gardening
  • depending on volunteers’ interests and skills: development and implementation of his/her own projects in consultation with the school management

 

Requirements for volunteers:

  • experience in dealing with people with disabilities (depending on ark with children/ youth/ adults)
  • adaptability and intercultural sensitivity
  • enjoy living in a community
  • ability to work in a team
  • pre-internship in a German ark beneficial
  • English skills advantageous, willingness to learn the local language

Ark communities in India, Asansol

The Ark communities in Asansol, are some of many arks worldwide, where people with and without impairments/disabilities live together. The goal is to give people with learning disabilities the opportunity to become a full member of the community. At the same time, however, they should also be able to receive the support and guidance they need.


Tasks for volunteers:

  • Daily accompaniment and support of people living in the Ark
  • Teaching skills for everyday life. This includes support with tasks such as eating, dressing, walking, etc.
  • Collaboration in leisure activities for residents with and without impairments/disabilities 
  • Assistance in the domestic or gardening area of the ark
  • Depending on your interests and abilities: Implementation of own project ideas in consultation with the employees on site 
  • Workshop: Production of handicrafts and cultivation of food in our own garden


Requirements for volunteers:

  • Experience in working with people with disabilities (depending on the Ark, work with children/ adolescents/ adults)
  • Adaptability and intercultural sensitivity
  • Joy of life in a community 
  • Ability to work in a team  
  • Preliminary internship in a German ark desired 
  • English language skills are an advantage 
  • Willingness to learn local language

Care of Needy Children Rightfully Nurtured (CONC’RN) Jalpaiguri, India

The partner organization Care of Needy Children Rightfully Nurtured (CONC'RN) in Jalpaiguri (West Bengal) in India, is committed to the implementation of children's rights. The target groups are children with disabilities, young people and their families. The organization promotes children through reintegration projects with children and young people, networking and lobbying with interest groups, and education and health promotion. Through its work, equal opportunities and a safe environment for children are to be guaranteed.


Requirements for the volunteer(s):

  • Willingness to learn the local language (Bengali, Hindi), English skills required
  • Pleasure in working with children and young people, previous experience in this area desirable
  • Intercultural sensibility


Tasks of the volunteers:

  • Supporting the teaching of children and young people, if necessary, organizing leisure activities for children and young people
  • Support for psychosocial counseling of children, adolescents and families
  • Support for the establishment of a permanent residential vocational training center for rehabilitation and income generating activities
  • Public Relations and Fundraising

Srijan Educational and Cultural Development Trust, Durgapur in Indien

The partner organization contributes to the education of school children in order to promote education and creativity as key aspects of development. Creative early childhood education in particular is intended to foster children's creativity. Students are encouraged to understand their own perspectives and to engage in constructive exchange with others. The aim of the organization is to support social literacy.

Requirements for the volunteer:

  • Intercultural sensitivity and adaptability
  • high level of responsibility 
  • Enjoyment of creative work 
  • good organizational skills and time management 
  • Team player

 

Tasks for the volunteer:

  • Supporting students in learning different topics
  • Supporting individual students in the transfer of knowledge using various methods 
  • encourage mutual support of students in the project
  • Support in the implementation of projects on the environment, biodiversity
